Bhaktapur: Home Minister Ramesh Lekhak has asserted that Nepal's government has made significant progress since the establishment of a democratic republic. Speaking at the inauguration of the newly constructed Juddha Barunyantra (Fire Brigade) Office building in Dudhpati, Bhaktapur, he dismissed the notion that Nepal has failed to make advancements despite historic political transformations.

The Minister also reminded citizens of the autocratic rule of former King Gyanendra Shah, highlighting the suppression of democracy, media, and civil rights during his takeover. "Media was captured, journalists were threatened, and citizens’ voices were silenced. The people of Nepal have not forgotten those days, which is why they do not see an alternative to the republic system," he said.

Acknowledging that problems still persist, Lekhak assured that the government is working to address them gradually. He emphasized that unlike authoritarian systems, democracy provides space for citizens’ voices and media freedom, which are crucial for national prosperity.

During the event, journalists Ramesh Giri, Peshal Acharya, Pushkar Raj Budathoki, and Lila Shrestha were honored for their contributions.

Home Secretary Gokarnamani Subedi shared that 94% of fire incidents in Nepal are caused by human activities, with only 4% occurring accidentally. He stressed the need for firefighters to remain on standby for emergency response.

According to Office Chief Bijay Prasad Dhaubhadel, the Juddha Barunyantra office was established in 2001 BS. Federal Urban and Building Construction Project Chief Ramesh Thapaliya stated that the newly constructed fire brigade office building was completed at a cost of Rs 57 million.
